the Krems Gate

Spend a wonderful time in the historic tower in the middle of the city wall. The beautiful roof terrace, the historic and knightly flair and your own garden with barbecue, dining table, hammock and your own parking space round off your stay in this unique building from the 15th century.

Access to the tower leads to the lowest but elevated floor which serves as the dining room and kitchen. At the entrance there is also a bathroom with a toilet and a small shower. From the dining table you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city center.

The two bedrooms on the middle floor have direct access to the adjoining bathroom with bath, toilet and vanity.

A spiral staircase leads to the top floor, which invites you to relax, enjoy and entertain. Here you will find a bar, various seating options and table football. The reading corner by the window offers a unique view of the Dürnstein vineyards.

From the top floor, you can take a staircase to the roof terrace. The atmosphere on the roof terrace invites you to sunbathe on the seating area and do yoga on the wooden deck. From here you can also enjoy the sunset with a good wine and a breathtaking panoramic view.

THE HISTORY OF DÜRNSTEIN
During the 11th century, the Kuenringers came to Austria from the Bavarian-Saxon region and received large areas around Eggenburg and Gobelsburg as imperial fiefdoms.

In the service of the Austrian sovereign of Babenberg, they acquired a large part of the Waldviertel. The Tegernsee monastery in Bavaria appointed them as bailiffs over the monastery's properties in the Wachau.

Asso von Kuenring acquired the area around today's Dürnstein, and his grandson Hadmar I fortified the rocks above the Danube for the first time.

In 1192/93, the English King Richard I the Lionheart was held captive at the Kuenringer Castle by order of the Babenberger Leopold V. A portion of Richard's ransom, which went to the Kuenringers, enabled the expansion and prosperity of the castle and town of Dürnstein in the 13th and 14th centuries.

In the 1347 division of inheritance between the Kuenringer brothers Leuthold III. and Johann I. the new local area is called a town for the first time. In this year Dürnstein should have received city rights from Johann I. The residents are referred to as citizens.

However, the town of Dürnstein only received its coat of arms from Emperor Friedrich III. Awarded in 1476.
